Sue Russell has been with the Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center (NE KY AHEC) since July 2009 and now serves as a Student Services Coordinator. Sue has successfully placed thousands of medical residents and health professions students in a clinical setting within the NE KY AHEC’s 17-county region, including third-year medical, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, nursing, dietary, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiology, surgical technician, and phlebotomy. Sue also covers the role of housing coordinator in the service region, making sure students and residents are housed comfortably and securely while on “away rotations” as part of their clinical experience with AHEC.
Sue has worked on multiple projects on the AHEC team, pioneering the way for the Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP), which provides local undergraduate students with a six-week paid work experience in hospitals, health departments, and other health care facilities. Sue also served on a University of Kentucky colorectal cancer project, known as the P-30 Rural Health Supplement Grant, which was focused on improving screening rates and patient outcomes in our region.
Sue served on the TENCO Workforce Development Youth Council Committee in Maysville (2014-’17), creating opportunities for students to have a second chance at successfully completing their education by offering them job training and skills development.
Sue earned an associate of arts degree in business administration from Morehead State University in 2009. She recently returned to MSU, completing a bachelor of university studies (with a minor in business) in 2020. She now plans to add a health care administration certificate on top of that degree.
Fun fact: Sue has a daughter that was born in South Korea, as Sue lived there for two years of her young adult life. Sue had to learn to drive a car with the steering wheel on the right side of the car and drive in the opposite lane. Sue also is passionate about music – she is a keyboard player and leads music on her team at church.
