CHARGE for High School Students

CHARGE for High School students was developed for high school juniors and seniors interested in a nursing career. The CHARGE program is an applicant-only program that allows students to receive additional opportunities based around achieving their goals of a career in nursing. Opportunities, such as job shadowing, study skills, resume writing, compassionate care skills, and introductions to the various careers within the nursing field are given to all who are accepted into the program. Additionally, CHARGE for High School students helps strengthen a student’s application for college or vocational nursing programs and assists all students in the decision-making process regarding what career paths within the nursing field they have accessible to them. All students who complete the program will receive ACT prep through the Princeton Review as well as a stipend for their time.

Requirements:

The CHARGE program for high school students is designed for students who are interested in entering the nursing career field. NE AHEC is currently accepting applications from juniors and seniors interested in the nursing career field within the 17- county NE KY AHEC region. In order to be considered for this program, students must apply prior to the application deadline and remain within the program for the remainder of their current school year or until graduation if the student chooses to do so (students will be re-evaluated to ensure previous year requirements are met). Students meet quarterly via Zoom for check-ins with program administrators. Students accepted into the program must shadow their assigned mentor a minimum of 2 days and must participate in in-person workshops that will be offered monthly throughout the program year. Workshops will be held in Morehead, Kentucky at the CHER building unless otherwise noted. Workshops will occur on Fridays once a month unless otherwise noted. Students are responsible for their own travel however mileage reimbursement forms will be available for students to complete at every workshop. Students interested in applying must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

How To Apply:

Students interested in applying must submit a completed CHARGE for High School students application as well as:

  • Submit a 500-word personal essay, typed and double-spaced (uploaded into the application) OR submit a 3-5 minute video speaking on why they want to enter the nursing field, what chosen specialty within nursing they are working towards, and why they want to join this program.
  • Submit a copy of your current high school transcript.
  • Have 3 professional references that the program may contact on your behalf
  • Have a parent or guardian submit the Parental Consent form.
  • Proof of vaccinations may be required depending on a student’s shadowing site. Shadowing placement will occur at local healthcare facilities close to the student’s home address as long as the student meets requirements for that location. After you submit your application and are approved to join the CHARGE- High School programming, a representative from Northeast AHEC will reach out to you regarding scheduling your shadowing experience. We strongly encourage all NE AHEC students to receive the COVID and Flu vaccinations as you may run into limitations regarding shadowing/participation at facilities that require the vaccines for programming.

Students accepted must attend an orientation meeting that will be scheduled by program administrators. If you have questions contact Lakyn Newcomb via email at Lakyn.Newcomb@st-claire.org or by phone at 606.783.6787.
